In this textbook we examine the extent to which moral values play a role as productive forces for companies and the economy as a whole, and explores the effect of ethical and unethical behavior at both levels. We show how ethics improves productivity, and provide specific ethics tools for practical application for both students and managers. Stemming from an overall interdisciplinary approach, this textbook fills a gap in the literature on ethics in business. Following a textbook structure, we first derive knowledge from scientific studies that are relevant for students, and then summarize the results. We explain ethical assessment approaches, and then provide an ethical assessment of economic behavior using case studies. Roleplaying and games are used to explain the behavior of people in relation to ethics. The 2nd edition has been completely revised and expanded to include new findings from the behavioral sciences (psychology, social psychology, sociology and behavioral economics). In particular, the research on emotions, motivation and group behavior have given rise to many new impulses in business ethics. In addition, new case studies and new chapters were included, like Politics and Morality, Theories of Justice, Global Ethics, and Institutions as Solutions to Specific Game Situations (game theory). This book is important for students and researchers as well as policymakers and business executives due to its focus on applications.

Investors, customers and employees increasingly expect organizations to take responsibility for the social impact of their activities. This book applies theory and research on moral psychology and social identity, to offer a new perspective on organizational social responsibility and business ethics. The authors use their unique approach to highlight recurring moral challenges in organizational behavior, such as leadership, work motivation, diversity, organizational change and stakeholder relations. Their analysis explains that people are reluctant to acknowledge and confront moral flaws in their workplace behavior, because this constitutes a source of identity threat. Common strategies to cope with this threat invite justifications and symbolic actions - and prevent moral improvement. Each chapter draws together a wealth of research findings and organizational cases. These not only identify and clarify common moral pitfalls, but also show ways to enhance the likelihood that organizations acquire the knowledge, willingness and ability to build an ethical work climate. It seems that a week doesn't go by without a new headline about an organizational scandal. With "The Moral Organization," Ellemers and de Gilder have done an enormous service for us all by using a social identity lens to demystify why it's often so hard to do the right thing in organizational life and how organizational members, groups, and institutions themselves can be encouraged to change. This is a deeply researched, immensely accessible book written by two expert guides on an always-timely topic. Blake Ashforth, PhD. Regents Professor and Horace Steele Arizona Heritage Chair, W.P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University, United States of America There are three key types of scholarly text: those that describe the world, those that explain the world, and those that change the world. This book does all three. In it, Ellemers and de Gilder not only do a superb job of charting the complex terrain of morality as it pertains to organizational life, but they also bring a fresh and vital perspective to the topic that allows readers to appreciate and master the complex challenges of becoming - and remaining - a moral organization. Deeply illuminating but also immensely empowering, this is a monumental text that will stand as a lighthouse for the field for decades ahead. Alex Haslam, PhD. Professor of Social and Organizational Psychology and Laureate Fellow, University of Queensland, Australia.

This textbook takes a new approach to economics by taking into account behavioral sciences and ethics. The basics of institutional economics are the starting point of the book, which are combined with insights from business ethics and behavioral science. It analyzes human behavior in order to discover incentives for economic agents to behave in a welfare-maximizing way, and analyzes the impact of human behavior and morality on economic systems, markets and politics. This textbook draws from new research results from behavioral economics, as well as from other disciplines, such as psychology and sociology, thus leading to new conclusions for economic science. The book sheds light on how people behave and how such behavior can be guided towards moral welfare for everyone. Furthermore, the reader is introduced to behavioral games, and to how these can be used to study economic behavior. Each chapter contains a summary on behavioral science findings as well as one on ethical findings. This book is a must read for advanced students in economics and political science but can also be of use to researchers of economics, as well as policymakers and business executives due to its focus on applications.

"The above powerful and unequivocal quotation from the former President of the USA reinforces the importance of ethics in the society and world we live in. It is perhaps the same quotation which has provided the focus for this book in an attempt to encourage construction practitioners to take a more proactive ethical stance in project management, change current working practices in the construction industry and improve project outcomes. Accordingly, the main focus of the book is to explore the role of ethics in construction management. In this regard, the overarching aim of the book is to create a factual client 'how to do it' guide or 'toolkit' for procuring more successful project outcomes. It is intended that this practical guide for construction practitioners can develop into a common due diligence framework on how to initiate, procure and manage construction projects and developments with ethical considerations at their heart. From this perspective, it will raise awareness of best practice and instil improvements in construction management with ethical compliance at the epicentre of project teams. It will seek to address the significant institutional risk that lies in the lack of a clear and consistent approach to ethics in projects and guidelines which are seldom universal and therein open to different interpretations. Such an approach will constitute a viable tool in ensuring effective, appropriate and successful interfaces of ethical standards and principles, via codes of conduct, in pursuit of improvements to construction management practices. Furthermore, it is also intended to provide an important insight into the influence of professional ethics in the success of construction projects and redevelopment programmes." [Publisher]
